Nantucket Grocery Prices — Much has been written about the prices of everything from gas to groceries on Nantucket. To shed some light on this subject, we attempted our own unscientific study of Nantucket grocery prices. How the Nantucket stores compared to a mainland store and how they compared to each other. This is a short list, but we tried to include items that most people would be looking for. Use it as an awareness tool. The prices were obtained July 28th 2004 for both Nantucket stores. The Connecticut prices were obtained on August 13th. Scan card discounts and special sales were not included. These were everyday regular prices assuming someone did not have a store card. Please be aware that this is only one "snapshot" in time. Store prices and policies do change over time. The Central Connecticut store is located in a high competition area. There are five major grocery stores in a one or two mile radius. Two Stop&Shops, Shaws, Price Chopper, and a Shop-Rite.
The Grand Union prices were 11% higher on Nantucket versus a mainland Stop&Shop. Not too surprising. What was surprising was that the Nantucket Stop&Shop was not only higher than the Grand Union but it was 21% higher than the Stop&Shop on the mainland. These are the numbers...you decide what they mean to you.
