Sankaty lighthouse is located on the Eastern shore of Nantucket. This lighthouse is located high on cliff that is continually eroding. The lighthouse was perilously close to the edge of the cliff and was in danger of going over the edge until it was moved 405 feet Northwest in the second half of 2007. The photo on the left is before the move (pre-digital).

The photo on the left is Sankaty lighthouse after the move was completed (digital).

Great Point lighthouse is located on the Northeast tip of the island. It was destroyed in March 1984 by a severe 'noreaster' storm and rebuilt in 1986. This photo was taken after it was rebuilt. This lighthouse is accessible only by 4-wheel drive vehicle, unless you are an avid hiker and don't mind walking seven miles in the sand. A special over sand access sticker to the Coatue Wildlife Reserve ($140/season) is required for your vehicle. Make sure you know how to drive on very soft sand. During the summer months many a tourist can be seen a few hundred feet onto the beach with their Jeep buried up to the frame. You really need to know what you are doing. Tows aren't cheap...
